Dear Amy:

Either you've got enough sense to know you are stupid, or someone has told you. But this isn't a 12-step recovery program.

I have sad news for you, Amy. Stupidity can come in many forms. The first form is "genetic stupidity", which I suspect is your problem. This means that most likely one or both of your parents are stupid. Unfortunately, the stupid gene is a dominant one because it was able to convince the smart gene to just lay off and take a break. Since doing nothing seems easier than doing something, the smart gene thought "hey, that's a darn good idea" and hence shut itself off. The second is acquired stupidity, where you are smart, but you just simply don't try. This is a social problem. However, you're in luck, stupid people are typically moved into middle management positions. Why is this good? These jobs are typically high paying and it has been proven that when you're working such a position, you can do the least amount of harm.

You also have stupid friends. That is OK, as stupid people tend to be social animals. Ever notice groups of people hanging around in places like clubs, bars and parks? They are stupid, but keep in mind, that none of them alone is as stupid as all of them together. Just as in nature, there is safety in numbers. The larger the group of stupid people, the safer they are. A great example of this is Congress.

So, don't be overly concerned. Being stupid is not a bad thing. Just try to keep your drool under control and make sure someone who is not stupid picks out your clothes in the morning and you should go a long way in life.
