Dear Jessica:

Dr. Stupid definately believes you when you say that you do not "get it". Apparently the concept of hitting a "Form Submit" button one was a tad bit for you to grasp as well, so no doubt advanced concepts like the equator will be exceedingly difficult for you to comprehend. Dr. Stupid is not aware of what the other six explanations are, but Dr. Stupid has answered this once before, and this time Dr. Stupid is answering it one more time, despite it being asked four times.

In a previous Ask Dr. Stupid, another visitor asked about the equator. Dr. Stupid feels you should read that explanation before proceeding.

Now, using the same basic experiment, Dr. Stupid recomments that you obtain the following two items. The first item should be a directional light device, such as a flashlight. The other item you should get is a ball, preferably a somewhat large ball, such as a soccer ball or basketball. Even a volleyball should work. The main idea is that you use a round ball. Basketballs make ideal balls for this experiment since you can clearly see the line that cuts the ball in half.

Once you've aquired these two items, do this: Shine the flashlight at the ball and if you can, focus the flashlight onto the ball. Some flashlights don't allow for this degree of control. Make the best of what you've got. If the ball has a long straight seam, then make sure the light from the flashlight is directed at the center of the ball, and is aimed from the side, not the top or bottom of the ball. Make sure the seam is parallel to the floor or table. Now, assuming the ball is on a table, adjust the angle of the seam of the ball so that it is 23.5 degrees off from parallel. Now, with the flashlight still aimed at the ball and while holding the flashlight still pointed at the center of the ball, walk around the ball while still pointing the flashlight at the ball.

If you paid attention, the direct light from the flashlight was in contact with the equator at all points during your trip around the ball. While in reality, the earth rotates around the sun, in this experiment, the "sun" rotated around the earth, mainly because it's easier to see the results. It is because of this "year round" direct exposure to the sun is why the equator tends to be hot all the time.

If this doesn't help, perhaps a book on the planet written in small words might be more to your intellectual level.

I hope this helps. If you have trouble finding answers, perhaps running into an apple tree may help you discover the gravity of your situation, or at least realize that a body in motion tends to stay in motion unless external force is applied to it. You might want a helmet and some soccer shoes to test this out. Make sure you run super fast. Also, run a video tape to capture this, as you might be able to win some money out of this. Who knows, maybe you can buy some brains on Ebay with these earnings!

Best of luck. Dr. Stupid hopes your insurance is current.
